GNWFL round 14 wrap: Northampton and Railways secure narrow wins as end of the home-and-away season looms

Northampton and Railways had narrow wins in the latest GNWFL round as teams fight for ladder positions in the last three rounds before finals. In round 14, Northampton managed to steal a win in Brigades’ backyard at GBSC Sport Park by just four points as the Rams held off a fourth quarter comeback by the Hawks. Tayte Pappin was awarded best on ground for the Rams in the win with an impressive performance while Tia Morgan, Mikenna Schultz, Sophie Maines and Shannon Smith all collected coaches votes. Northampton’s captain Shultz scored two goals while Gabby King added one for the Rams. Brigades’ best players were Tahlia Singleton, Claire Garnaut, Demi Tate, Liberty Graham and Hayley Gibson while Dale Caton and Charlotte McCabe kicked one goal each. The Rams managed to start the game on the right foot with a goal, keeping the home side scoreless in the opening term. Brigades then edged ahead in the second quarter with a goal at the back end of the term after multiple chances in front of the big sticks earlier in the contest. It was all Northampton in the third term with an impressive two-goal quarter. Brigades fought back hard in the last term leaving Northampton supporters on the edge of their seats as the Rams were unable to score in the final term. Brigades had multiple chances in front of goal in the last term but failed to convert apart from one goal in the dying moments of the contest. Northampton held on for a four-point win, 3.4 (22) to 2.6 (18). Meanwhile at the Rec, Railways defended their home ground with a nine-point win over Rovers. Blues’ Hanna Dethlefsen was awarded best on ground for Railways with an impressive two-goal outing while Rovers’ best was Dainira Papertalk. It was an arm-wrestle in the first half of the game as the Blues only managed to get ahead by one point before more of the same in the third term, with neither side able to get ascendancy. The Blues went into the final term only up by two points but managed to keep Rovers scoreless for the quarter. Railways won 3.6 (24) to Rovers 2.3 (15). The competition’s top two teams — Chapman Valley and Towns — had the bye last weekend, while Brigades, despite their loss, remain comfortably in third. Northampton, Rovers and Railways are all on equal points vying for fourth, with the Rams having a game in hand.
