As the first turbine soars over the landscape near Hyden, Synergy announced its Kings Rock Wind Farm community benefit fund was open for applications.

Registered charities, not-for-profits and other social groups can apply for grants from the $100,000 pot.

Grants up to $50,000 are available for projects which address community needs and help create thriving communities.

Synergy chief executive officer Kurt Baker said the company was committing to delivering lasting benefits to those communities which host renewable energy infrastructure.

“We know local community groups and organisations are best placed to identify the projects that will make a real difference in their area,” he said.

“This fund will help bring those ideas to life, supporting initiatives that enhance community wellbeing, strengthen local connections and deliver positive outcomes across the region.”

The components for 17 gigantic wind turbines are being transported from the Port of Bunbury to Hyden, with the first already erected.

The site is about 35km north-east of Hyden in the Shire of Kondinin with the towers expected to be up to 125 metres tall and with blades 80m long.

It is hoped the site will generate up to 105MW of electricity.

Synergy asked in May that drivers be aware that the over-sized trucks would be carrying their huge loads to the site.

They are driving via Collie Lake King Road, Wagin-Dumbleyung Road, Absolon Street, Ebsary Street, Dumbleyung-Lake Grace Road, and Rabbit Proof Fence Road.

Deliveries set off at sunrise each day, passing through Darkan in the morning and Dumbleyung by midday on their 450km route.

The loads, which can be up to 94m in length, are expected to be running until October.

Community organisations which wish to tap into the fund have until September 21 to apply, with successful recipients to be announced in November.
