Two people have been found dead and about 20 are missing after Tropical Storm Fred blew through North Carolina.

Emergency services combing areas of the state flooded by remnants of the storm confirmed the two deaths on Thursday.

Their identities were not immediately released and about 20 people remain missing.

The storm that blew through the area on Tuesday made roads impassible, washed out bridges and swamped homes and businesses.

Another Fred-related death was reported earlier in the week in Florida, where a driver hydroplaned and flipped his car into a flooded ditch.

Forecasters said Henri will likely strengthen into a hurricane as it approaches the northeastern US early next week.
