The data revealed on Saturday pushes the number of NSW coronavirus cases to more than 50,000 since the start of the pandemic.

NSW Health protection director Jeremy McAnulty confirmed 1219 NSW residents were now in hospital with Covid-19, with 233 of those people in intensive care.

Dr McAnulty said vaccine rates were on the rise.

“81.2 per cent of the over-16 population has now received its first dose of Covid vaccine and 50.6 per cent of people are now fully vaccinated,” he said.

“This is fantastic news.”

The NSW Health chief pointed to a number of suburbs in western Sydney where the spread of the virus has been the most severe.

“I‘d like to call out suburbs where we’re seeing the highest numbers of cases yesterday, they are Merrylands, Auburn, Guildford, Liverpool, Bankstown, Greenacre and Punchbowl,” Dr McAnulty said.

Police are patrolling the Sydney Park area to quash a planned anti-lockdown protest despite current public health restrictions prohibiting large outdoor gatherings.
