Beautiful and bold initiative

Rockingham locals have joined thousands across the country in shaving their head for the Leukaemia Foundation in the World’s Greatest Shave.

Shae Devi had her head shaved last Wednesday, while Declan Chidlow and his grandfather Philip Carter had their head shaved on March 13.

The money they raised will go towards helping those living with blood cancer and their families.

Hair collected will also be given to Sustainable Salons to be recycled into wigs, used for compost or made into floating booms that can absorb oil spills.

Ms Devi said this was the first year she had taken part but she was keen to grow her hair and shave it again next year.

“I have friends and family members who have passed away from leukaemia, it inspired me to do this,” she said.

“I can’t walk around shaking the tin and asking for donations as I am in a wheelchair but I can do this.

“I have a voice and I can voice my opinion and share the importance of contributing towards this cause.”

Ms Devi has raised close to $300 and said her goal was to reach $1000.

Declan and his grandfather Mr Carter put their hair into bunches ready to be cut off by those who had donated to their page, with people aged 12 to 86 testing out their barber skills.

They then had their heads shaved completely bald.

While Declan had gone through this experience before, it was his grandfather’s first time taking part.

The pair managed to raise close to $900, well exceeding their initial goal of $500.
