Perth’s Hayden Norman has claimed his second Brett Johnson Memorial win on the weekend with a 2sec. margin after a brilliant opening lap.

Fans converged on the Nickol Bay Speedway on July 1-2 for the annual memorial, created in 2014 to celebrate the life of the Kalgoorlie-born youngster, who visited the club in 2013 and rode in a two-seater street stock car.

He died in October that year.

Norman, who claimed his maiden memorial win in 2016, started the feature race from fourth place but after a flying start he seized the lead in the opening lap.

Front row starter Jamie Oldfield kept Norman honest throughout the opening 10 laps and was able to snatch the lead back before a mechanical failure ended Oldfield’s race.

Of the 22 racers who started the feature race, only seven would finish with drivers dropping like flies during the dying laps of the race meet.

Norman remained calm throughout and powered away from the field to win by more than 2sec. ahead of Brinley McGaffin and third-placed Lenny Bates.

He also recorded the fastest lap of the race with a 20.84sec. lap time.

The night started with a passenger car ride for locals involved with the Empowering People in Communities not-for- profit, dedicated to empowering disability support services in remote areas.

The Nickol Bay Speedway Club also donated $5000 to EPIC at the end of the night.
