Narrogin’s evacuation centres will be fitted with an upgraded satellite communication system to allow residents to make calls and connect to Wi-Fi in an emergency.

The Shire of Narrogin received funding through the Federal Government’s Strengthening Telecommunications Against Natural Disasters project which was rolled out in response to the Black Summer bushfires of 2019/20.

The Shire’s Local Emergency Management Plan lists the administration building as the emergency coordination centre and the Narrogin Recreation and Leisure Centre as an approved regional evacuation site.

The Shire administration building has recently been fitted with an upgraded NBN satellite communication system.

Work is set to start on upgrading the system at the Narrogin Recreation and Leisure Centre in the coming weeks.

The upgrades will allow residents to make phone calls and access the internet in the vicinity of the centres if the existing communication network becomes damaged.

“It is important to have the lines of communications open between family and friends during the event of an emergency,” Shire President Leigh Ballard said.

“It is distressing for all involved when you do not know whether a loved one is safe due to the loss of telephone and internet lines.”
