The Shire of Narrogin will celebrate Australia day with a range of community events for the whole family, as nine locals become Australian citizens.

The day will kick off with a barbeque breakfast at 7.30am on the grassed area at the John Higgins Community Centre followed by an acknowledgement of country song and the presentation of the community citizen of the year awards.

Nine Narrogin residents, including Daisy Green, will take part in the Citizenship Ceremony where they will make their Pledge of Commitment to Australia.

Ms Green has been living in Narrogin with her husband Jason and their six-month-old daughter Phoenix for more than three years.

She was born in Vietnam and moved to Australia in 2016 to study nursing with the dream of opening her own health clinic one day.

“I planned to study to be a nurse and then come back to Vietnam but then I met my husband and everything just changed after that,” Ms Green said.

“We like what we have here, it’s a peaceful life and I’m studying childcare so maybe I can open a family day care one day.”

Ms Green started studying nursing at Murdoch TAFE and frequently travelled between Perth and Narrogin to complete her studies.

Once she became settled in Narrogin, Ms Green started studying childcare and education assistance at the TAFE while she was pregnant because she had “more time to concentrate”.

“It is always a fantastic and yet quite a moving experience to administer the Pledge of Commitment and welcome them into the Narrogin community as our newest Australian citizens,” Shire President Leigh Ballard said.

“The candidates are always so thankful and proud to have finally become Australian citizens who will enjoy the fullest of privileges our great country offers which we, who were born here, may sometimes take for granted”.

The pool will be open from 10am with free entry and a range of family-friendly activities such as face painting, art and craft and entertainment.

The day will come to an end with a free outdoor movie session of The Croods: A New Age at 7.30pm at Alby Park.
