A foil boarder has escaped injury after being attacked by a shark off the coast of Exmouth.

Surf Life Saving WA said the man was foiling — a water sport where a surfboard is equipped with a hydrofoil — about 1km off Wobiri Beach when he was attacked by the shark about 5pm on Tuesday.

The incident was reported about 8pm.

“The shark has bitten the board, the person did not sustain any injuries,” a SLSWA spokesperson said.

A 3m great white was spotted by a member of the public at the beach just three hours before the attack.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development issued a shark warning on Wednesday morning.

“Take additional caution in the Wobiri Beach area,” a spokesperson said.

“Adhere to beach closures advised by Local Government Rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers or Surf Life Saving WA.

“Officers from Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, along with staff from other agencies will continue to monitor the situation.”
