The Leschenault Community Nursery are looking for new volunteers to join them in 2023, giving locals a “hands-on” taster session at their open day next month.

The LCH will be hosting a Volunteers Open Day on February 11, allowing community members the opportunity to get down and dirty in the garden to experience what it’s like a to be a volunteer.

With a variety of roles available from administration to pot washing, nursery manager Jacquie Rusha said there is something for everyone.

“We’ve got a line-up of different things happening,” she said.

“We’ll introduce people to what we do at the nursery and why we do it and give people a bit of an insight of what it is like to volunteer with us… we want everyone to have a hands-on experience of how they can get involved.”

Between 10am and 2pm, visitors will be shown around the nursery before taking part in a series of interactive workshops allowing them to try their hand at some of the responsibilities required of a volunteer, including taking cuttings and potting.

A coffee van and sausage sizzle will also be available on the day.

Ms Rusha encouraged everyone to get involved and give back to their local community.

“Volunteering has lots of benefits,” she said.

“There’s social and psychological benefits but volunteering for us means people are also helping the local environments — because we grow all of our own local, native plants here — and they go out to local areas to rehabilitate the surrounding area.”

“It’s very much a community enterprise, run by the community, for the community.”

The Volunteers Open Day is a free event open to anyone, from 10am-2pm on Saturday February 11.
