Leschenault Recreation Pavilion was filled with proud faces as the Shire of Harvey community honoured residents who go above and beyond. The annual Shire of Harvey Community Awards Dinner celebrates the achievements of individuals and groups that make a valuable contribution to their community. Among the award winners at the June 9 event were Harvey resident Jennifer Maughan, Yarloop Community Resource Centre manager Julie-Ann Ford, volunteer breastfeeding counsellor Kerry Morrison, shire community representative Seana Sloan and Binningup Surf Life Saving Club volunteer Mia Nandapi. Shire president Paul Gillett said the award winners’ community inputs deserved to be highlighted and each one had made an exceptional contribution to their community. “(The awards dinner) highlights what a great community we have, congratulations to the amazing community members for the contributions you have made,” he said. A number of community groups were also recognised on the night, including Binningup Surf Life Saving Club and Harvey Senior Citizens Centre’s Meals on Wheels program. Meritorious Service Award - Jennifer Maughan For her service to the Shire of Harvey’s community groups and laying the foundations for future generations to build on the high level of commitment, service and dedication to the community. Appreciation Award - Julie-Ann Ford For her commitment to the rebirth, health and growth of the Yarloop community as well as understanding the importance of being someone the community can trust, rely on and call upon for compassion and strength. Appreciation Award - Kerry Morrison For her work with the Australian Breastfeeding Association, empowering mothers and having a tremendous impact on families and parents through her caring, supportive and nurturing nature. Appreciation Award : Seana Sloan For being a passionate supporter of the local community and volunteering to be a part of the communication link between the community and the Shire as well as ongoing dedication to making the local community a better place. Youth Award: Mia Nandapi For her work with the Binningup Surf Life Saving Club and volunteering 122 lifesaving service hours including beach patrols for the community and water safety duties for the club’s junior program acting as a role model for the club’s younger members. Community Group Award: Binningup Surf Life Saving Club For running a variety of programs that provide training, socialisation, fitness and connection for people of all ages, specifically its Silver Salties program. Community Group Award: Harvey Senior Citizens Centre Meals on Wheels For contributing 44 years of service to vulnerable community members, hosting 83 volunteers and freshly preparing more than 200 meals per week to 58 people.
