In Pictures: Community turns out to celebrate 90th anniversary of the Brunswick Town Hall

Residents of Brunswick Junction, past and present, gathered at the weekend to commemorate a special milestone for the town.

On Saturday, a celebratory afternoon tea was held at the Brunswick Town Hall to mark the 90th anniversary of the beloved building, which was officially opened on July 22, 1936.

Sub-committee member Leesa Sutherland said she was speechless, with the afternoon nothing but amazing.

“We’ve had people come from everywhere and to see how much they enjoy coming along, looking at the photos, catching up, sharing stories ... it’s wonderful,” she said.

From 1pm to 4pm, more than 200 people attended the event, enjoying an afternoon of swapping stories and reminiscing with friends, while a range of displays turned back the clock to showcase the hall’s history over nine decades.

An exhibition of wedding dresses lined the stage alongside photos from weddings held at the town hall, while numerous photo displays shared countless memories.

A throwback to the pictures was also on display, while artworks from the Brunswick Primary School students were on show.

The Brunswick Singers provided entertainment with some old classics, while Judy and Brian Kealley joined in on the final song, dancing as a tribute to some of the events once held at the hall.

Keeping everyone fed was the Brunswick Town Team which provided a Devonshire Tea, while commemorative souvenirs were also available for purchase to remember the occasion.

Harvey shire president Michelle Campbell said the hall had been booked and busy over the 90 years, hosting many community events and celebrations.

“The fact that this hall remains such a valued part of local life is a credit to the many people who continue to care for it,” she said.

Cr Campbell said Saturday’s crowd was amazing and it had been fabulous to hear people sharing stories and looking back on memories.

“It has been an amazing 90 years of heritage and thank you for the countless memories and to the milestones and the memories still to come,” she said.
