NAIDOC Week 2022: Harvey and Waroona host roster of activities and enjoy visit from former Eagle Lewis Jetta

This year’s NAIDOC celebrations have officially come to an end but the week saw a huge roster of activities for Harvey and Waroona, with former Eagle Lewis Jetta taking part in Waroona’s Friday Night Footy event. Harvey’s celebrations begun with the official opening of Harvey Aboriginal Corporation’s week long Our Country art exhibition, which featured a series of pieces created by the town’s Indigenous community. A number of activities were also held at the Australind and Harvey libraries, such as a bush tucker cultural experience and Indigenous story time. Waroona residents gathered at the police station for a flag raising ceremony to start their celebrations followed by a number of craft and bush tucker workshops hosted by the Waroona Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation. To end Waroona’s NAIDOC Week former AFL star Lewis Jetta visited the town’s oval for WATSIC’s Friday Night Footy event. WATSIC member and Indigenous Elder Jennifer Turner said the week was a way for Waroona’s First Nations people to “get together”. “It’s been good promoting our culture in the community, (the activities) have been open to anyone, people bring their kids along and take part in the activities,” she said. “(NAIDOC Week) is a way for us to all come together and take part.”
