The Bunbury City Council’s Containers for Change refund centre has reached a significant milestone — one million containers in less than four months.

Residents of the South West are being praised for their recycling efforts through the initiative that also gives people the opportunity to donate the 10¢ refund to local community groups, sporting clubs, schools and charities.

The Davenport facility opened on October 1 and the container deposit crew accepted their millionth container on Monday.

The City’s waste services project officer Melanie Turnbull said the initiative had been overwhelmingly embraced by the community to reduce litter and landfill and increase recycling.

“Since Christmas it has been inundated with containers and we want to see more recycling and less litter,” she said.

We see groups of people on the side of the road and kerbside picking up littered containers to bring in.

Ms Turnbull said many children had loved the concept as a way of saving up pocket money and donating to local groups.

The City’s refund centre manager Zoo Sumi said the facility received between 120,000 and 140,000 containers per week. “The milestone showed the efforts of the community in their recyc-ling habits have changed, and especially how people are educating themselves more now, too,” he said.

“We have people from all over the South West, people from Boyup Brook and down in Denmark coming to this refund point.”
