Perth Symphony Orchestra ‘goes rogue’ as it heads to Harvey to shine string players in an all new light

Harvey audiences will be taken beyond the fourth wall as four string players from one of Perth’s most prestigious orchestras tell the story of concert creation through an eclectic mix of genres. Unlike a normal recital S.T.R.I.N.G.S takes its audience behind the red curtain and into the rehearsal room as a string quartet from Perth Symphony Orchestra attempt to create a program for an upcoming, fictional concert. A humour-fuelled saga of arguments, egos and even flirtations, as the players try to implement their own musical tastes into the show, takes the audience on a journey through the creation of a concert. Harvey Recreation and Cultural Centre will be filled with a cacophony of genre, with the show’s repertoire set to include a mix of classical, rock, pop, electronic and jazz music. Creative Director and Executive Producer Bourby Webster said she wanted the show to be intimate and passionate to provide an “incredible” musical experience. “Having spent years playing in a string quartet, the things that go on behind the scenes are often totally different to the final, polished, accomplished product the audience sees,” she said. The unlikely mix will have Nirvana fans banging their heads, contemporary enthusiasts tapping their feet to the likes of Beethoven and Mozart and pop lovers humming their favourite Britney Spears songs. Ms Webster said the show had received major praise from audiences. “It is definitely not what you’d expect from orchestral musicians, so great for first-time audiences, and it will have you laughing and crying in equal measure,” she said. S.T.R.I.N.G.S will be a one-night only performance for Harvey residents and will take place Thursday, April 7 at 7.30pm, with shows then heading to Harvey, Esperance, Margaret River and Kalamunda.
