WA College of Agriculture opens to show off one of the top agriculture schools in the State
One of the State’s top agricultural schools is opening its gates this weekend to let the public explore the 900ha farm.
WA College of Agriculture - Harvey is hosting its annual open day on Saturday from 10am to 2.30pm, aiming to give students the chance to show off what it is like studying at the school.
All sections of the school’s massive commercial farm will be open, with tours running every 15 minutes.
Associate principal Dean Pfitzner said it was an opportunity to see everything from the dairy farm and sheep and beef sections to the farm workshop and even the trade areas.
“It’s a great opportunity to show the public what we are all about, with the key focus being on agriculture, agricultural education and the associated trades,” he said.
“We also try and draw in some links with industries to have a bit of a career focus, so our students and prospective students can see where to go beyond school.”
Students will also be running a wood raffle, with money raised being put towards the school’s country week trip.
School officer Sue Fimmano said there would also be expert talks for prospective students to learn more about what the college has to offer.
“People can come through and walk through the class areas and see the displays,” she said.
“It’s a good opportunity for people who don’t know what we offer, or for kids who are interested.”
Mr Pfitzner said the open day was also a great opportunity for prospective students to learn more about the school.
“In essence, you get a one-day look around the college operations and are able to see and get access to everything,” he said.
Ex-students from as far back as 1953 are among some of the other attendees of the annual event, with many using it as an opportunity to come back and reconnect.
