Magical journey eggs on South West children to read, sing, enjoy

Bunbury families are in for a treat as a “magical reading egg” calls the library home for a week as part of the Paint the Town REaD campaign encouraging reading to young children.

Children can attend a story time session at the Bunbury Library tomorrow to hear Dolphin Discovery Centre aquarist Alex Gorman, pictured, tell the story of the egg — which follows a boy who discovers it on a beach and helps it to grow by reading and talking to it.

The campaign aims to encourage young children to develop their abilities and brains by engaging in reading, singing, rhyming and talking activities at home.

Paint the Town REaD coordinator Gaia Boranga said the campaign was a wonderful way of connecting through books and through rhymes.

“We know the early years are very important in children’s lives and this helps them learn so they’re ready for school as well and helps parents connect with their kids,” she said.

The egg symbolises a child’s brain, which grows when you read and talk.

“Paint the Town REaD helps the community to realise how crucial those early years are and how important it is to read, talk, sing, play with their children every day and that is so important for them to grow healthily and for their long-term development.”

The egg will visit kindergartens, playgroups and family centres around Bunbury for the campaign.
