Prostate cancer charity to host luncheon to raise funds and awareness for men’s health

A South West men’s health organisation will be hosting a luncheon at the end of the month to help raise funds and awareness. Bridgetown-based organisation Prostate Care’s lunch will be hosted at Wattleseed Cafe in Bridgetown on September 30, marking the end of prostate cancer awareness month. The group will draw the winners of its raffle which started in late July. Up to $7000 in prizes are up for grabs including a fibreglass pond and air-conditioner, with the funds raised going towards tailored support for men who are struggling after prostate cancer treatment. Group member Michelle Wright said the idea of the luncheon began as a way to bring community members together and celebrate the end of the two-month raffle, which has raised more than $5000 so far. “There are 10 prizes and we spent the past two months selling raffle tickets and we’re hoping to make it a celebration and announcement of who had won,” she said. “As a by-product of it, we are also taking the opportunity to raise awareness around prostate cancer, early diagnosis, improving the narrative around talking about prostate cancer.” There is set to be an informal panel of local men who have dealt with prostate cancer. “It’ll be a casual and informal story-telling space for those keen to share and to raise awareness,” Ms Wright said. “I will also be telling people about the charity and the charity’s upcoming events, including the Million Dollar Mullet.” The lunch will start from 12.30pm and is a BYO-alcohol event.
