Shire of Waroona to start work on improving access to iconic Preston Beach with State Government grant

One of the region’s most popular beaches is receiving a major accessibility boost.

The Shire of Waroona is breaking ground on new accessibility upgrades at Preston Beach this week, with the State Government providing $100,000 towards the project.

Aiming to make the beach more welcoming for people of all abilities, the upgrades include a disabled access barbecue, new table with seating and accessible play equipment.

Work is set to begin on Tuesday and is expected to be complete by mid-June.

Waroona chief executive Mark Goodlet said the upgrades aimed to create an area that was available for use to the widest number of people possible.

“Improving the facilities so that they are all-abilities will help do this,” he said.

“Improvements include all-abilities facilities and path access to a new table and seating, a new accessible barbecue, as well as play equipment suitable for everyone young at heart.”

Mr Goodlet said access to the beach would remain open throughout construction.

Murray-Wellington MLA Robyn Clarke landed the funds for the project and welcomed the new upgrades.

“It will provide not only residents, but visitors with disabilities, opportunity to play and use facilities at the beach picnic area,” she said.

Mrs Clarke said she was most excited to see the upgraded play equipment and looked forward to playing the giant naughts and crosses.

Mr Goodlet said the beauty of the improvements was they could be used by everyone.

“This will help families for instance where a member needs play equipment that is more accessible,” he said.
