Excitement is building as the doors are about to open on Waroona’s newest family resource.

The Waroona Lions Club is hosting the grand opening for its new toy library this week with a fun-filled family event to celebrate the occasion.

Doors open at 10am on Saturday, with a sausage sizzle, face painting and bubbles, some of the activities on offer.

The club its hoping to sign up its first library members who, for $25 a year, will be able to take toys home for two weeks at a time.

After the grand opening, the library will be open on the second and fourth Saturday of each month from 11am-1pm.

The plan to open the library was spearheaded by Waroona Lions Club member Lisa Fry, who said she remembered taking her own children to the toy library which used to operate in town.

Ms Fry said with the cost of living always rising, there was a gap in the community that needed to be filled.

“Times are tough at the moment, and people are struggling,” she said.

“So we want to provide a service to people who might be able to benefit from us being here.”

The library is stocked with toys suitable for children up to five years old, and the club is accepting donations to fill the space even more.

Ms Fry said much of the stock in store came from a generous donation from the Waroona Leos Club — an offshoot of Lions clubs for people aged 12-18.

The Leos donated $1000 for the club to buy trolleys full of new toys.

The library was also supported directly through the Lions Club donating its earnings from a recent wood raffle to the project.

Ms Fry said she was especially grateful for the support of the neighbouring Waroona Playgroup, the Shire of Waroona, and Waroona Community Resource Centre.

“We want to see how well it’s received,” Ms Fry said.

“We’ve already had some good feedback, and everyone thinks it’s a good idea.

“It will be nice to see it continue to grow.”

Ms Fry said this weekend’s event was a great opportunity to check out the library.

“Come in and have a look, let your kids pick out some toys,” she said.

“This is a new adventure for the Lions Club.”

Any donations being offered to the library must be easily cleaned and fully intact.

Toys can be donated through the Lions Club’s Furniture Bank in town, or by emailing toylibrary24@gmail.com.
