Turn your retic off, people of Perth. The rains are here to stay. The forecast for the next week or so is expected to be wet, wet, wet.

Perth gardens soaked up a nice burst of early rains on Thursday, but with plenty of cloud in the skies and a low-pressure system en route the light showers are nothing compared with what is to come.

Metro area dwellers can expect the rains to continue into Thursday to hit a predicted total of 15mm in some places, with the downpour kicking up several notches on Friday.

“We’re only expecting about 5-10mm more in Perth today as the showers move through, but this could increase if a possible thunderstorm hits,” Bureau of Meteorology WA duty forecaster Luke Huntington said.

“A low-pressure system coming close to the coast tomorrow will generate heavier falls in Perth of 15-25mm, but this could be up to 50mm if we do get some good thunderstorms moving through.”

Don’t put the gumboots away too soon.

The rains will ease off slightly by the weekend with 5-10mm on Saturday, but don’t put the gumboots away too soon.

Mr Huntington said another cold front was expected to move through during Sunday, bringing increasing showers, storms and strong and gusty winds with it.

While the showers are expected to ease up somewhat early next week, BOM modelling suggests winter is well-and-truly here with stronger cold fronts on the horizon with the pattern of showers and cold fronts forecast to increase.

But the real stand-out rainfall in the regions, namely Carnarvon which copped a 60.8mm deluge in the 24 hours from 9am on Wednesday.

“60.8mm at #Carnarvon since 9am yesterday,” tweeted BOM WA.

“Further south, Pearce RAAF collected 17mm and Brookton recorded 15.6mm. More rainfall to come today and through the next week.”

The drought-prone region is expected to enjoy more relief with rains continuing into tomorrow.

“Up there we are seeing good lines of showers and thunderstorms in the region, with additional rainfall of 50-70mm expected between now and tomorrow morning up through the western Gascoyne and western Pilbara before it starts to ease,” Mr Huntington said.

“The central Wheatbelt and Great Southern agriculture areas will be drier with 5-10mm per day for the next few days.”
