Julie Bishop is back. Sort of.

The popular outgoing member for Curtin joined Prime Minister Scott Morrison at the WA launch of the Liberal Party’s campaign at The Camfield in Burswood last night.

Ms Bishop, who will step away from her seat officially on Saturday, joined Mr Morrison on stage as Senator Michaelia Cash grabbed the microphone to rev up the crowd by welcoming Mr Morrison with a hug and kiss.

“That is how we rock in WA, go team!” she said to rapturous applause. “We will ensure we are giving to Australians and, in particular West Australians, what we know they need.”

A huge gathering of the party faithful, including Attorney-General Christian Porter, cheered as Mr Morrison said WA “is the true heart of aspiration” in Australia.

Ms Bishop took the opportunity to counteract Mr Morrison’s earlier description that China was Australia’s “customer”.

The former foreign minister said the relationship was about equality.

“I think our relationship with China is one of deep and mutual respect. We are partners. We are trading partners. We have worked together in a whole range of areas,” she said.

Ms Bishop also praised Mr Morrison for his leadership.

“Scott’s a very experienced politician and he was a very good treasurer, and he took on the role of Prime Minister in less than ideal circumstances and he’s done an exceedingly good job.”
