In-form Fremantle forward Pat Voss happy to bide his time at WAFL level behind club’s key position talent

In-form Fremantle forward Patrick Voss says he is learning plenty of lessons from fellow forwards Josh Treacy, Jye Amiss and Luke Jackson as he looks to break into the senior side. Voss has made a massive impression since joining the Dockers in the supplemental selection period, with his haul of six goals in Peel Thunder’s 74-point win over West Coast at Lane Group Stadium on Saturday taking his tally to 15 through his five WAFL games. He has also played in three AFL games, producing a goal with his first kick in his senior debut against Western Bulldogs in round eight. But despite his path to the AFL side currently being blocked, Voss said he enjoyed close relationships with all of the club’s key forwards. “We’ve got a really good culture, we want to get the best out of each other, we genuinely want to see each other do really well,” he said. “We’re all under 23, so if we can stick together in the future, big things will come. “I’ve got real clarity on where I sit in the team and the things I have to do to move forward. That might not necessarily be in the AFL side, but I feel like I’m developing and getting the best out of myself, which is really positive.” Cut by Essendon at the end of last season despite winning their VFL best-and-fairest award, Voss said he had experienced moments of self-doubt before heading west and winning a contract with a strong summer. “You definitely think a little bit about that, the thoughts do pop into your head,” he said. “I went through the process and internally, I was pretty confident ... I still had that hunger and that drive. “I thought I had what it takes to make it at the level, so that’s what really matters.” Voss said he was loving life at the Dockers and heaped praise on senior coach Justin Longmuir and forwards coach Jaymie Graham, saying the pair had been brilliant mentors. “I think the environment at Freo has helped me a lot,” he said. “I’ve got real clarity going into every game on what a good game looks like for me, and that’s not necessarily going out there and kicking five goals. “It’s not an outcome thing, it’s the things I can control. I feel like off the back of those controllables, I’m getting results.” Voss’ forward partner Matt Taberner also chimed in with four goals in the Thunder’s big win, while Will Brodie (34 disposals) and Neil Erasmus (30 disposals, six tackles) were among the other Dockers to impress.
