VideoThe Tigers claim the WAFL colts flag, with potential top-two pick Daniel Curtin starring in the midfield and down back.

He may be feted as WA’s top AFL Draft prospect, but premiership glory with his best mates was the only thing on Daniel Curtin’s mind on Sunday.

Curtin was integral to Claremont’s first WAFL colts premiership win since 2019, producing a near best-afield performance to help the Tigers prevail by 11 points.

Under the watchful eye of North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson, Curtin lived up to the hype that has him billed as a top-end draft pick.

He garnered a game-high 23 disposals while also taking five marks, laying four tackles and finishing with three inside 50s, putting a neat bow on a season which saw him named an All-Australian after an impressive national under-18 championships.

North Melbourne currently have the second pick in the draft and could end up with the third pick as compensation for the expected departure of defender Ben McKay.

Curtin, viewed by many draft analysts as a potential top-five pick, said it was a privilege to play in front of multiple-premiership-winning coach Clarkson, but he was more focused on winning than putting on a show for him.

“It was an absolute honour. Hearing about (Clarkson) was pretty funny, but it didn’t really cross my mind today,” Curtin said.

“At the end of the day, my number one goal was to win a premiership with my best mates - we came away with it and it’s bloody awesome.

“I just wanted to get the win, just make sure I could do it for those boys, because it’s the last time we’ll be playing together as a team.”

Curtin said he was delighted to have ended his time at Claremont as a colts premiership captain and spoke fondly of being able to go out a winner alongside his teammates for the club he loved.

“It’s great to go out this way, winning a grand final with your best mates; it can’t get any better,” he said.

“I love it here, I love Claremont, they’ve been absolutely unbelievable for me and I appreciate everything they’ve done for me.”

Curtin’s versatility has been one of his most appealing attributes for AFL scouts, and the 195cm beanpole spent time on-ball throughout the game, before rolling back into defence late as Perth attempted a late comeback.

Having spent time in defence, midfield and attack for the WA under-18 side, Curtin said he did not particularly prefer any position and was willing to play wherever he was needed.

“I absolutely love any challenge that comes to me, I love playing everywhere, so I’m happy to go anywhere,” he said.
