Scott Pendlebury didn’t have it all his own way in his record-breaking game, but his party was never going to be denied at the MCG.
The Pies were given an almighty fight by West Coast, who have adopted the name Waalitj Marawar for Sir Doug Nicholls Round, before ultimately prevailing by 10 points.
Pendlebury wasn’t quite at his vintage best, but still finished with 20 touches and five clearances, and was involved in an entertaining scrap with Eagles star Harley Reid.
“We weren’t really going head-to-head. He put me on my ass early so I had to get him back over on the boundary,” he said post-game.
“But he’s a great young player, and we knew these guys were going to be a tough outing and respect their pressure and how they’ve gone about it. “
The Pies faithful turned out with more than 90,000 rolling through the MCG gates with Pendlebury crediting their electric energy for helping get him and his team over the line.
“This crowd was something else, though. Thanks so much for coming out.”
“The Collingwood army, there’s nothing like it, it’s just unbelievable, and they just made this day so special.
“We’ve tried to embrace the week, and I think towards the end, I could feel it catching up. I was pretty cooked.”
Still, Pendlebury said he has no desire to end his record-breaking career just yet.
“It feels like it’s been an eternity, but it’s gone quickly at the same time, and it’s been a hell of a ride, but there’s still more in the tank, though,” he said.
“When you get drafted, every kid wants to experience the ultimate and being at Collingwood, I get to do that, playing at the MCG in front of a crowd that’s absolutely nuts I just love it.”
