VideoHawthorn co-captains Jai Newcombe and James Sicily are managing fitness concerns ahead of Thursday night's match against Fremantle in Perth.

Passionate Fremantle fan Jason Flannery says he bought flights to Melbourne for grand final week in January because he anticipated airlines would charge ridiculous prices once the Dockers started winning games.

And Flannery has declared he feels sorry for loyal Fremantle fans who will be priced out of travelling to Victoria if the Dockers make the grand final following mid-season price surges.

The West Australian revealed how much prices have increased during Fremantle’s seven-game winning streak.

Virgin Australia has 15 flights from Perth to Melbourne on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday before the grand final which land before 7.30pm and they are all being advertised for $1067.

They don’t include the ability to take luggage. Most flights to Melbourne on the day after the grand final are less than $350.

Flannery risked purchasing two return flights to Melbourne, including luggage, for grand final eve which come back on the following Monday. They cost him $1218 each in January. Those seats are now a whopping $2248.

“The reason I bought them in January was because of this. It’s the pricing,” he told The West Australian.

“The few times I have been to the grand final, the flights are hard to get and they are bloody expensive if you leave it to the last minute. If they don’t make it, we will go across anyway, spend the weekend in Melbourne and see if we can get tickets.

“It would be unreal if the Dockers make it. I’m a very staunch Fremantle supporter. It would be good for the community as well.”

The price spikes have produced fears that hardened fans will be unable to afford to travel if the Dockers qualify for their second ever grand final. Flight prices have been an issue for Fremantle and West Coast fans every time their clubs have won through to the last Saturday in September.

Flannery said passionate fans will be left disappointed if the Dockers keep winning.

“I feel sorry for the young mums and dads who aren’t in the position to pay these prices,” he said.

“With the cost of living we’re going through today, most people will not be able to do it. Nobody can justify spending thousands of dollars on flights, then trying to get tickets and then paying more for half decent accommodation.

“For two people, you are now talking about over $7000. There’d be 98 per cent of the population that can’t afford to throw that type of money around.”
