Former Australian speedster Mitchell Johnson has urged Indian Premier League franchises to swoop on Josh Inglis in Thursday night’s auction, but only if they’re planning on playing him.

The destructive ‘keeper-batsman is one of 10 West Aussies and six Perth Scorchers up for grabs, available at the lowest base price of about $35,000.

Inglis is coming off another impressive Big Bash League tournament, amassing 400-plus runs for the second straight summer.

The 25-year-old showed a different side to his game in BBL10, with the majority of his 413 runs - at an average of 34.42 and strike rate of 140 - coming in the middle order, instead of at the top.

“He’s an absolutely amazing talent and I’d love to see him go and get some experience over there,” Johnson told The Fast And The Curious Podcast.

“If he does go over, I don’t want him to just sit on the bench. I’d love to see him play because I think he’s a great talent.”

Last year’s runners up Delhi Capitals could be one franchise in the mix for Inglis if coach and former Australian captain Ricky Ponting’s recent comments are anything to go by.

“I reckon Inglis has got something,” Ponting told cricket.com.au last month.

“He plays spin beautifully. He played Rashid Khan on his ear, so there's that side of it. And he's batted at the top of the order in first-class cricket for WA, so there obviously must be a good technique in behind what he can do in the white-ball stuff.

“I know ‘Painey’ (Tim Paine) and ‘Hadds’ (Brad Haddin) have spent a fair bit of time with the keepers and Hadds said he's very, very good with the gloves.”
