The Scorchers fell at the final hurdle this season, going down to the Sixers in last weekend’s final, but will fancy their chances of going one better next summer after locking away the key personnel.

Perth had a startling five players from their best XI off-contract ahead of the embargo period, which started after last weekend’s final and now prevents teams from signing players for a few months.

Veteran leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed is the only player who hasn’t been locked away before the contract pause.

The Scorchers were forced to learn a difficult lesson after BBL08, which saw Shaun Marsh, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Hilton Cartwright, Lance Morris and Clint Hinchliffe poached in a massive Melbourne raid.

Coach Adam Voges admitted the franchise had moved quickly to avoid history repeating itself.

“We make it no secret that we love having a strong WA flavour within the Scorchers and I think if nothing else we learnt a lot of lessons out of what happened a couple of years ago,’ Voges said.

“We certainly made it a priority to keep that core group of players as best as we possibly could so we’re really pleased with the result.”

Voges, who is currently off-contract after three years at the helm, admitted there was interest from other clubs for all four players, but in particular for their skipper.

“I know there was some interest out there for him (Ashton) as there was for all of those guys, they’re great players, they’ve performed particularly well for us and were a big part of our success this year,” Voges said.

“No doubt there were a few enquiries from the other teams but it’s a credit to them – we’re really pleased they’re going to stay with us.

“The re-signings are a huge moment for us. It allows us now to go forward with a group that has had some great success this year.”

Voges said he would sit down with WACA CEO Christina Matthews and high performance boss Kade Harvey after emerging from quarantine, to assess what his future looks like.

The 41-year-old admitted there could be conversations around how viable it is for one coach to lead both the State and BBL teams in the COVID-19 biosecure world.

“It’s no secret that I’m out of contract at the end of this season and once I get out of quarantine we’ll sit down and have a look at that,” Voges said.

“There’s no doubt that’ll be part of the discussion, in the current environment how sustainable is doing everything?”

“It’s certainly all-encompassing and I need to keep finding ways to find the little moments where I can refresh and recharge the batteries to make sure I’m doing the best job that I possibly can.”
