Perth Scorchers skipper Ashton Turner has put his hand up to fill a middle-order role ahead of Australia’s Twenty20 series opener against New Zealand in Christchurch on February 22.

Turner, who batted mainly at No.6 during the Scorchers’ recently-concluded Big Bash campaign, said he felt most comfortable in that position and backed his skills to get the job done if selected for his country.

The 28-year-old played the finisher role well in BBL10, scoring the majority of his 228 runs - at an average of 22.8 and blistering strike rate of 152 - during the back-end of innings and power surges.

“I've spent my whole career batting in the middle order for various teams, whether it's for Western Australia or in the Big Bash for the Perth Scorchers or when I've got to play for Australia,” Turner said during a video press conference.

“It's certainly the role I feel the most comfortable playing. I feel like if selected I've got the skills and I feel like I'm playing well enough to do a good job for the team but that being said, there's some quality guys in our squad who also bat in the middle order.

“I've got no doubt whichever way the selection hammer falls that the XI we put out onto the park are going to be really competitive.”

The Game AFL 2024

Turner has appeared 17 times for his country - 11 T20s and six One-Day Internationals.

His best performance on the international stage was in an ODI against India in Mohali, nearly two years ago, when he propelled Australia to a record-breaking run chase with a stunning 84 not out from 43 balls.

Stand-in coach Andrew McDonald flagged that Turner would be one of several players vying for spots alongside fellow Scorcher Mitch Marsh and State teammates Marcus Stoinis (Melbourne Stars) and Josh Philippe (Sydney Sixers).

The five-match series across the ditch will be the best chance yet for the WA quartet to book their ticket to the T20 World Cup in India in October.

Limited-overs skipper Aaron Finch confirmed that BBL10 player of the tournament Philippe would make his international debut in the series opener, likely in the top-three.

The Australian squad are currently in quarantine in New Zealand but will get the chance to train together for the first time on Friday.
