Villarreal have rained on Athletic Bilbao's Copa del Rey trophy parade, scoring deep into stoppage time to earn a 1-1 draw in the Spanish league.

Athletic won their first Copa in four decades last weekend with a win over Mallorca, and the club paraded the trophy for its fans ahead of Sunday's match at San Mames Stadium.

The party was going to plan until VAR spotted a handball inside the area five minutes into stoppage time, and Villarreal playmaker Dani Parejo converted from the spot to seal the draw.

"The hangover from all the celebrations was a concern. That's always dangerous," Athletic coach Ernesto Valverde said.

Oihan Sancet had put Athletic ahead in the 66th minute, some 20 minutes after Villarreal went a man down when Santiago Comesana was sent off.

The draw hurt Athletic's chances of fighting for Spain's final Champions League spot, leaving them four points behind fourth-placed Atletico Madrid with seven games remaining.

Sixth-placed Real Sociedad conceded late in a 2-2 draw at home against bottom-of-the-ladder Almeria.

Adrian Embarba equalised for Almeria in the 88th minute, his second of the match, converting from the penalty spot after a red card for Sociedad midfielder Igor Zubeldia.

Sevilla moved nine points clear of the relegation zone with a 2-0 win at Las Palmas, while second-to-last Granada won by the same score against Alaves.
