VideoFootball: The Matildas have announced their squad for the Tokyo Olympic Games, with star striker Sam Kerr set to captain the team.

She’s made her name on the soccer pitch and now Sam Kerr is set to add another string to her bow: children’s book author.

The 27-year-old Matildas captain has delved into her own history for her novel series Kicking Goals, which is based on her journey of moving away from AFL as a young girl because there wasn’t a girl’s team for her to join.

Supported by her family, she then discovered soccer, and as they say, the rest is history.

In the first book, The Flip Out, young readers will “discover how tough it was to learn all the rules and the positions of this new game and to play in a new team ... but very soon it starts to feel more and more natural for Sam, and before she realises, she’s fallen in love with soccer”.

The book and series will cover the universal themes of family, friendship, teamwork, personal challenges (on and off the pitch), overcoming obstacles, dealing with bullies, and perseverance.

Last year the soccer superstar signed a six book deal with Simon & Schuster Australia.

The series will be published for middle grade readers, usually aged between eight and 12, with the first two books due to be released by the end of the year. The first is set to be released on September 1.

Kerr will play for Australia at the Tokyo Olympics later this month and will also be the face of the Women’s World Cup in 2023, hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

“Nothing makes me happier than to be recognised as a role model to a younger generation of Aussie kids,” Kerr said when the deal was announced.

“Through these books, I hope to share some of my personal stories of growing up, of pushing boundaries and chasing my dreams. I can’t wait to bring the readers on this journey with me’.

Kerr started playing with Perth Glory when she was just 15 and in 2016 she played for the Matildas at the Olympics in Brazil, and she was the top goal scorer in the 2017 Tournament of Nations.

Since joining Chelsea in 2019, Kerr has positioned herself as one of the best female strikers in the world and was also named 2018 Young Australian of the Year.

The second book in her series, A New Knight is due for publication in December.
