SWFL 2022: HBL women’s team snap losing streak in yet another low scoring contest against Eaton Boomers

Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault and the Eaton Boomers added another intriguing chapter to their SWFL women’s rivalry on Sunday at Glen Huon Reserve. The Lions, who infamously beat the Boomers 0.5 (5) to 0.4 (4) last season at the same venue, once again proved too good — this time pipping them 1.3 (9) to 1.2 (8). While both sides found scoring in the blustering conditions a challenge, the even nature of the contest and the spirit of the players ensured compelling viewing for the spectators. Heading into the clash, Boomers coach Berend Kaaks was hopeful of a strong performance, with a host of his prime movers — including Kiarni Stevens, Trinity Brown and Jessica Ruland — all fit and available for selection. However, all of the Boomers’ stars were unable to quell the visitors, who willed the ball forward at every opportunity in a bid to force multiple stoppages. In the ruck, Bree Hurrell held her own against Renae Adams, while Riley Brine and Claire Brown were easily the Lions’ best. Kaaks could only look on pensively as his side poured numbers forward in the final minute, however the Lions stood firm in the teeth of goal. “It was a tough result after a two-point loss to Carey Park,” he said. “But despite the conditions, when you hold the opposition to one goal, you’d hope to create enough chances at the other end to get it done.”
