Olympic legend Dawn Fraser says Chinese swimmer Sun Yang should not have been allowed to compete

Swimming’s world governing body has sent a “warning letter” to Mack Horton over his podium protest as Olympic legend Dawn Fraser says Chinese swimmer Sun Yang should not have been allowed to compete in the World Championships. Horton polarised the swimming world on Monday night when he refused to shake Sun’s hand or stand next to him on the winner’s podium after finishing second in the 400-metres freestyle final in Gwangju. But Fraser said FINA, swimming’s governing body, and the World Anti-Doping Agency erred in allowing Sun to swim before he faced accusations in the Court of Arbitration for Sport of smashing vials of his own blood with a hammer in a clash with testers last year. She said the case, which is to be heard in September, should have been fast-tracked to before the meet. “They’ve got to come together and stop this sort of rot going on,” Fraser told The West Australian this afternoon. “FINA and WADA should have made sure this was done before the World Championships and he should have been stood down until his case came on. Champion WA swimmer Eamon Sullivan also urged FINA to to tighten inconsistent anti-doping rules in the wake of the furore. The former world record-holder said he understood Horton’s frustration, which triggered the abuse on Horton’s Instagram page. “Sun Yang is China's pride, and you are Australia’s disgrace! Remember, China is the father you can’t afford!” one post read, with other abusive messages written in English and Chinese. Some nastier comments threatened Horton’s mother with death and targeted his girlfriend Ella Walter, with one claiming, “She must be blind”. Horton had also been subjected to vile online abuse when he labelled Sun as a “drug cheat” before the Rio Olympics. Sullivan, a three-time Olympic medallist, said FINA’s decision to merely warn Sun over the vials accusation and not stand him down pending the WADA challenge had invited Horton’s bitter post-race response. He claimed recent FINA findings against Australian swimmers Thomas Fraser-Holmes and Maddie Groves showed inconsistency in anti-doping laws. Fraser-Holmes was banned for 12 months for missing a trio of Whereabouts doping tests (where athletes must provide details of where they can be found) after the Rio Olympics, while Groves successfully argued for a reprieve on the same charge. Sullivan said Sun’s comparative “slap on the wrist” over the vial-smashing allegations was disappointing. He believed Sun should have been stood down pending the CAS hearing. “You can’t really have that cloud of doubt for swimmers going on,” Sullivan said. “For years there has been that, ‘what if?’question that people always get frustrated with and you never know. “When there is clearly a cloud of doubt, those things should be explained before they are allowed to swim again, regardless of who it is and the situation around it. “FINA need to put their money where their mouth is, do their job and try to get to a clear decision. The thing that frustrates me as an ex-athlete is I know how much effort Australia and our athletes put in to proving how clean they are. Everyone needs to be treated the same.” Sullivan’s comments were supported by Horton’s father, Andrew, who told Melbourne radio station 3AW that his son was also frustrated by the lack of consistency around drug testing. “Mack, like so many in the sport, just likes consistency in the approach to the testing regime,” Mr Horton said, claiming his son’s protest was “respectful”. “I think he was frustrated and disappointed this issue has tagged along into world championships.” Horton admitted his frustration after the race saying: “I just won't share a podium with someone who behaves in the way that he (Sun) does.” He told Wide World of Sports in April that swimming’s credibility was a stake with Sun’s continuing case. But Sun, who faces a lifetime ban if found guilty, accused Horton of disrespecting China. “I was aware the Australian athlete had dissatisfaction and personal feelings towards me,” Sun said via an interpreter after claiming his fourth straight 400m world title. “Disrespecting me is OK, but disrespecting China was very unfortunate and I felt sorry about that.” The national swimming community rallied strongly around Horton after the incident, with Australian Olympic Committee chief executive Matt Carroll leading the charge. “The Australian Olympic Committee is all for supporting and protecting clean athletes,” Carroll told Macquarie Sports Radio. “We always have been and we always will be, that’s our position. “Australian athletes and obviously Mack, enjoy our support for being clean athletes and for taking that strong stance against ... doping in sport. “Mack Horton is an athlete of great conviction ... and we respect Mack for his conviction. He’s obviously making a stand.” Australian Dolphins head coach Jacco Verhaeren denied having any knowledge that Horton would stage his post-race protest, but backed his strong stance. “That was his idea to do that, but let’s put it this way, I understand him very much,” Verhaeren said.
