Australian qualifier Astra Sharma is through to the last 16 of the WTA's Abierto Zapopan in Mexico after a three-sets win over Harriet Dart.

The 25-year-old came from behind to post a 2-6 6-2 7-6 (7-2) win over the Brit.

It was the second meeting in two days of the two qualifiers with Sharma progressing to the main draw then by a much easier scoreline, 6-2 6-3.

Sharma served five aces in their round-of-32 clash and converted three of five match points.

She will now meet the winner of No.7 seed Leylah Fernandez and Anna Kalinskaya for a place in the quarter-finals.

Other winners were Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, who beat No.5 seed Nao Hibino 6-1 7-5, and Renata Zarazua who saw off Katarzyna Kawa 7-6 (9-7) 6-0 .

Second-seed Marie Bouzkova overcame Irina Maria Bara 6-3 2-6 6-3 to advance.

Meanwhile Garbine Muguruza bounced back from her loss in the Qatar Open final with a win over Irina-Camelia Begu in the first round at the Dubai Championships.

Also advancing to the second round were 10th-seeded Elise Mertens and Madison Keys, the 11th seed.

Ninth-seeded Muguruza defeated Begu 6-3 7-5 after twice coming back from a break down in the second set and sealing the win with a four-game streak.

Muguruza was playing two days after a straight-sets loss to Petra Kvitova in the final in Doha.

"It was tough because I arrived yesterday, so it was just fighting spirit," Muguruza said.

"Just trying to adapt as fast I can."

Her second-round opponent is Amanda Anisimova after the American dominated Ana Konjuh 6-2 6-2.

Keys hammered Liang En-Shuo 6-1 6-1 in just her third match this year, after she missed the Australian Open due to a positive test for coronavirus.

Mertens needed two-and-a-half hours to overcome Viktoriya Tomova 4-6 6-2 6-4.

The Belgian was successful despite 51 unforced errors and eight double faults.

Former world No.4 Caroline Garcia got past three-times grand slam winner Angelique Kerber 3-6 6-2 6-4.

Shelby Rogers swept past Kaia Kanepi 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 while also progressing was American compatriot Jessica Pegula.

Twelfth seed Marketa Vondrousova beat Ana Bogdan 6-4 6-4 while 14th seed Elena Rybakina overcame China's Saisai Zheng 6-0 6-4.

Other winners on a busy day of first-round action included Jelena Ostapenko, Tereza Martincova and Carolina Garcia.

Vondrousova will play Coco Gauff in the second round.
