There’s plenty to like about this week’s Travel Picture of the Week, captured by reader Jill McLernon in Canada.
The first thing that catches your eye is, of course, the grizzly bear crossing the road. Wildlife photography can be notoriously tricky, with little opportunity to plan the perfect shot. But Jill has managed to capture the bear mid-stride, bringing a wonderful sense of movement to an otherwise still landscape.
Beyond the bear there’s more to admire. The straight stretch of road provides a strong leading line, drawing the eye towards the imposing mountains in the distance. Towering trees frame either side of the image, while low-hanging clouds add atmosphere and a sense of scale.
I particularly like the contrast between the human-made road and the surrounding wilderness, with the bear providing an unexpected meeting point between the two.
It’s a great shot, made all the more memorable by its perfectly timed subject.
