Crown Theatre Perth to be heaven-sent with season of musical Sister Act starring Casey Donovan

Hail, Holy Queen! Perth is to be blessed with a season of the musical Sister Act starring Casey Donovan in the biggest role of her career to date, Deloris Van Cartier — made famous by Whoopi Goldberg in the hit 1992 film. Joining Donovan on the Crown Theatre Perth stage from April 2025 will be Genevieve Lemon as Mother Superior, and Rhonda Burchmore as choir leader Sister Mary Lazarus. Based on the much-loved movie about a disco diva placed under protective custody in a convent, the show features original music by Tony and Oscar award-winning composer Alan Menken, best known for writing the magical soundtracks of Disney’s Aladdin, The Little Mermaid and Beauty And The Beast. The original West End production opened in 2009, with Goldberg as a producer, and also enjoyed a Broadway season. This Australian production will premiere at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre in August. Making her mark as one of Australia’s most versatile performers since winning Australian Idol, Donovan was last in Perth earlier this year in & Juliet, following a diverse range of roles in theatrical productions including The Sapphires, Rent, We Will Rock You, Chicago, and 9 To 5 The Musical. “Although I never thought I would see the day when I put on a habit, I’m so incredibly excited to be joining Sister Act and to be playing the lead role of Deloris Van Cartier, played by the iconic Whoopi Goldberg in the much-loved films,” Donovan said on news of her casting. “Growing up, Sister Act was one of the movies that I watched on repeat.
