‘Embarrassing’: Inmate at NSW prison accidentally set free after administrative blunder, massive search ensues

A major manhunt is under way following an “embarrassing” blunder which led to an inmate set free by mistake. The administrative error earlier this week meant that 35-year-old Kyle Quayle was mistakenly released from Clarence Correctional Centre, in NSW, on the same day he was sentenced to a year behind bars. Quayle, who is believed to be in the Newcastle area, was allowed to walk free on Tuesday, while serving a sentence for theft and assault convictions. Red-faced authorities in the state have issued a public appeal to trace him and return him to prison. NSW Premier Chris Minns has slammed the blunder, describing the situation as “embarrassing”. He said: “I’m sorry it happened, really – it is embarrassing.” “In 2026, with the biometric and identification tools available, it shouldn’t happen. I want to make sure it doesn’t happen again.” NSW Police Superintendent for the Newcastle district Lisa Jones told ABC Radio Newcastle that searches would be extended from Newcastle to Taree, some two hours away. She said: “We just need to community to be our eyes and ears.” She urged the public not to approach Quayle if they believe they have seen him. He is described as being 180cm tall, of medium build, with black hair, brown eyes and an unshaved face. Police say he is Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander in appearance.
