Couple to add some variety
Harvey has its first Variety Bash car in 30 years thanks to a Mornington couple who have a long history with the charity event.
Terry and Sue Shaw have been involved with variety for 37 years between them and want their Spider-Man-themed car to stand out as much as possible.
“We want the Harvey car to be right up there with the best of them in the bash so that the focus is on Harvey,” Mr Shaw said.
“It’s exciting because it’s new for everybody, on the two little outings we’ve done everybody has embraced the idea and the concept,” he said.
He said they had raised around $860,000 all up and became involved when his daughter was three years old in Princess Margaret Hospital and required special equipment donated by Variety.
Between them the pair have travelled around Australia and New Zealand, South Africa and Route 66 in the US for Variety Bash events.
Mr and Mrs Shaw took a five-year break from the bash after moving to Mornington and managing Mornington Adventure Camp, with Mr Shaw involved in building Camp Variety.
“It’s kind of like we’ve come home to where we’re supposed to be, everything fits together,” Mrs Shaw said.
Each team must raise a minimum of $8000 to participate in the August event but Terry hoped to raise $25,000 with his record being $87,000 in 2006.
