Neo-Nazi Joel Davis has become the latest to throw his support behind Ben Roberts-Smith, taking the opportunity to push for the alleged war criminal’s release from custody while speaking outside a court. Mr Davis, a former high-ranking member of the National Socialist Network (NSN), is accused of harassing federal MP Allegra Spender and NSW Liberal Leader Kellie Sloane, a court was previously told. He has admitted to stating “Patriots, I bid thee to rhetorically rape Allegra Spender” in a message on Telegram after she condemned an NSN rally outside state parliament last year, with the message later going viral after it was shared on social media. He is further accused of commenting “stupid b**** needs to be beaten fr (for real)” regarding an article about NSW Liberal leader Kellie Sloane. Mr Davis was freed from custody last week after he was granted bail by the NSW Supreme Court as he faces 10 charges of using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend. He has not yet entered any pleas. Mr Davis has now rallied behind alleged war criminal Ben Roberts-Smith, who was on Tuesday charged with five counts of the war crime of murder relating to the deaths of Afghan nationals between 2009 and 2012. Mr Davis on Wednesday pushed for Mr Roberts-Smith’s freedom while speaking with reporters outside the Downing Centre Local Court. “I don’t want to talk about my case but I want to say something about Ben Roberts-Smith’s situation, which I think is emblematic ... of everything wrong with this country,” Mr Davis told reporters outside court. “What kind of a country prosecutes its war heroes ... Free Ben Roberts-Smith.” The comments come after Mr Davis’ case was briefly mentioned in court on Wednesday, with the matter to return before the court in June. A court was last week told how Mr Davis was exiled from the NSN as members were “not impressed” by his alleged rape comments, with NSW state leader of the NSN Jack Eltis telling him he would be removed from the group for six months for “bringing the organisation into public disrepute”. Mr Davis claimed during his third failed bail application in January that he was no longer an NSN member, just days after the group announced it would shut down. This was confirmed by Justice Natalie Adams in the Supreme Court last week. His lawyer Sebastian De Brennan had also claimed his client had changed some of his political views and just wants to focus on being a father, having missed the birth of his child due to being in custody. Mr Davis is barred from going within 100m of Ms Spender and Ms Sloane, their electoral offices, and from contacting them as per his bail conditions, and has been banned from using social media.
