Artwork on full display in Harvey Town Hall as winners are selected for NAIDOC Week art competition
The Harvey Town hall was packed with activities last week as NAIDOC Week celebrations captivated the town.
From Monday to Friday the hall was the centre of activity with language workshops, a community lunch, tool making and bush tucker all running in the hall.
A centrepiece was a set of artworks on display as part of an art competition running through the week.
Emerging elder Ninnette Comito said the quality of the artwork has only continued to grow over the years.
“There’s a lot of detail in all of these and you can see the difference in the artwork between all the different artists as well,” she said.
“I love to see how everybody does their artwork.”
Mrs Comito said having the juniors displaying artwork was important to allow the younger people the opportunity to learn.
“By them exploring colours and textures, learning about the symbols and the culture as well, that’s how it all begins,” she said.
“Everything begins by doing something.”
Suzanne Marshall, one of this year’s judges for the competition, said the quality was amazing.
“You can look at the artwork and see the stories,” she said.
“And I think that’s what you have to have in a piece of art.
“Overall, the quality is amazing and it’s all so individual. It’s really a privilege to be involved.
Mathew Garlett’s recreation of the six seasons won the art competition overall.
Mrs Comito said the competition would likely return next year.
