Documentary From Sky to Sea looks at life of drone photographer Jamien Hudson on journey back into the water

Strapped to a chair, bolted to a boat and dwarfed by a 40-tonne giant frolicking nearby, Jaimen Hudson had more reason than most to feel nervous when he heard the sounder that meant a whale was under the vessel. The Esperance man had grown up in the water, diving and surfing from a young age, but he had also seen footage of what a big whale could do to a small boat. And there was one other reason the father-of-one had to be nervous: he was a quadriplegic who not only could not swim without assistance but lacked the capacity to cough up water from his lungs should he accidentally swallow some. Put him in water and he was, as he puts it, a cork. “When you hear the sounder go off on the boat because the whale’s gone under you ... I was very aware of the fact that a 30 or 40-tonne whale could make light work of this one or two-tonne boat,” Mr Hudson told The West. “You just try to put that aside and in the moment you sort of forget about it. “A few moments there I’d be looking at the (drone camera) screen watching the whales and you’d hear them blow and look over and they’re right next to you, and you think ... people in my situation with my injuries don’t get these kind of opportunities.” The anxiety and joy of the moment has been captured on screen for From Sky to Sea, a WA-made documentary about Mr Hudson, which tracks his dream to get back in the water more than a decade after the motorbike accident that fractured his C5 vertebrae at the age of just 17. That accident was also the catalyst for Mr Hudson to take up drone photography, a passion that first gave him purpose and then turned him into a social media star. His most famous videos — dolphins surfing the Esperance waves or a pair of curious whales saying hello to a paddle-boarder — have racked up millions of views. Using drones to photograph the ocean he could no longer explore was partly a way to stay busy and partly an attempt to reconnect with the outdoors. “You could not underestimate how important it was, to be honest with you,” Mr Hudson told The West. “(After the accident) I was very heavily focused on work (at his parents’ Esperance tourism business), which often gave my mind an escape from thinking, ‘Woe is me’. I would concentrate on the things I had on task. “But that was during the week. When you’re young ... I did miss my connection to the ocean. We were very lucky to live in a house opposite one of the most popular surfing beaches in Esperance. I remember crying, thinking, ‘Why me?’ “Droning found me through work: a guy came into the shop and he turned out to be the chief marketing officer for DJI, which is almost the Apple of drones, and as soon as I saw the footage he had captured I was hooked right away. “I was nervous about getting one because of my reduced hand function, but my mum and dad and my now wife — she was my girlfriend then — said, ‘Buy one and if you can’t fly it you can sell it’. “It engulfed me, really, and that was my focus.” Almost right from the start Mr Hudson’s photos and videos, posted to Instagram, took off. The postcard-ready blue water, sunset-soaked beaches and, perhaps most of all, the dolphins and whales that habitually turned in starring roles, found a ready audience. “I was really lucky, I think I took up aerial photography at just the right time because nobody was doing it in Esperance,” he said. “My first video was a 360-degree pan (of an Esperance beach) and it got 90,000 likes. Then the dolphin surfing video ... that one ended up with 600,000 views on YouTube and on Facebook it really took off.” The naturalistic, borderline meditative, nature of Mr Hudson’s photos and videos offers an antidote to the bile and vacuousness that represents social media at its worst. Instead of pouting, would-be influencers, there are humpbacks waving their flippers to the sky. Rather than tedious photos of someone else’s dinner, there are dolphins hurdling white-caps. This perhaps explains part of why Mr Hudson’s photography is so popular. But if you think the wholesome nature of Mr Hudson’s content has protected him from the downside of social media ... have you met the internet? “The internet is undefeated in its quest to be mean to people,” Mr Hudson said with a laugh. “I was in Bali when (one) video was going crazy and I would read the comments at first, then I ended up stopping because it’s sad. You can read a hundred good comments and one bad one would get you down. Now I’m older, I don’t care.” Six years after that first drone purchase, Mr Hudson takes his out for a spin as often as work, weather and the demands of home life allow. “If the weather’s good I’ll be out there,” he said. “Ninety per cent of the time you don’t see anything, 5 per cent you do and they’re not doing much, but the other 5 per cent it’s a really cool wildlife interaction.” The documentary, made by the multi-Emmy Award nominated team of Leighton and Jodie De Barros over three years, follows Mr Hudson’s attempt to become the world’s first underwater cinematographer with quadriplegia. That includes a battle to get doctors to sign off on his return to the water and gruelling efforts to strengthen his body, at one point using an engine block lift to get into a specially adapted bike designed to strengthen his arms and boost his lung capacity. “I was sitting on that marlin board, that’s the one on the back of the vessel, sitting there and literally you’re 5km or 6km out to sea, right,” Mr Hudson said of his return to the water. “I haven’t been in the ocean for about 13 years and I’m basically a cork, really, I’m at the beck and call of the people who are with me.“I was anxious. It’s not just being in the ocean but attempting to dive with giant mammals: how are they going to react to me? But once I hit the water, as soon as that ocean water hit my lips I felt like I was at ease.” But the film also tells the story of a devastated 17-year-old who feared he would never have a family of his own, who grew up to become an apparently well-adjusted and content husband to Canadian-born wife, Jess, and father to son Captain — even if he still spends his son’s swimming lessons wishing he was in there too. “I always had a bit of a chip on my shoulder,” Mr Hudson says in the film, about his expectation that the wheelchair would be an issue for any would-be romantic partner. Similarly, he thought children would be off the table because of his inability to do the things so many fathers take for granted, like getting up in the night when the baby cries. “After my accident I probably never felt I could feel (so happy),” he tells the camera. “Everything seemed so perfect in our lives.” Without spoiling exactly where the film ends up, Mr Hudson’s ambition faces setbacks. Not everything goes to plan. There are tears. But overwhelmingly what shines through, both in the film and in conversation with the funny and charming 30-year-old, is an honest optimism. The way Mr Hudson sees it, he has been lucky to have a “positive outlook”, even before the accident. “It’s not until you’ve come close to ending your life and you bounce back that you realise how fragile life can be,” he said. “I didn’t appreciate being able to walk around and use my hands (before the accident). I watch people walk now and think, ‘Wow, it’s almost magical’. I just hope that (the message gets through) that even after a setback you can get out there and make something of your life. “You only get one opportunity at this. You’re a long time in the ground.”
