A baby boy is fighting for his life after the car he was travelling in collided with a truck in the South West.

The RAC rescue helicopter was dispatched after the accident on Railway Road in Elgin near Capel, about 195km from Perth.

Police said a white Hino truck and a silver Mitsubishi Triton utility were travelling south before they collided around 10.35am on Wednesday.

A St John WA spokeswoman said at least two ambulances attended to a 13-month-old boy, who was inside the Mitsubishi.

“The 37-year-old male driver of the utility and the 18-year-old male driver of the truck were uninjured,” a police spokesperson said.

The 13-month-old baby was airlifted to the Perth Children’s Hospital. A PCH spokesman confirmed he remains there in critical condition.

Major crash officers were dispatched to the scene after the collision.

A DFES spokesman said firefighters from the Bunbury and Donnybrook rescue services were also in attendance.

Police said road closures were in place on Railway Road between Gavins and Elgin roads.
