As a Chinese tourist injured in a horrific bike crash on Rottnest Island fights for life in hospital, police are investigating whether she was wearing a helmet at the time.

The 38-year-old was found with life-threatening head injuries near the island’s Thompson Bay area on Digby Drive about 5pm on Tuesday.

Police and staff from the Rottnest Island Nursing Post attended the scene and the woman was airlifted by an RAC Rescue Helicopter to Royal Perth Hospital.

She is receiving treatment in the intensive care unit.

A helmet was found near the crash site and police are investigating whether it was being used at the time of the crash or just being carried.
