Thanasi Kokkinakis has needed just 79 minutes to book his spot in the second round of the ATP Tour's Canadian Open.

The 28-year-old South Australian scored a 6-3 6-3 win over Gael Monfils in Montreal and takes on fourth seed Hubert Hurkacz of Poland for a spot in the Masters 1000 event's quarter-finals.

World No.81 Kokkinakis was second best in the aces and winners numbers, but broke the French veteran four times en route to his second win in three clashes against the 37-year-old Parisian.

Earlier on Wednesday, four other Aussies recorded straight-sets victories, three over higher-seeded opponents.

After Rinky Hijikata beat fellow qualifier Taro Daniel of Japan 6-1 7-5, lucky loser James Duckworth defeated American Marcos Giron 6-4 6-1 and Alexei Popyrin scored a 6-3 6-4 win over Czech Tomas Machac.

Hijikata will face seventh-seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov next, Duckworth sixth seed Casper Ruud of Norway and Popyrin 11th seed Ben Shelton of the US.

The Game AFL 2024

Jordan Thompson, runner-up in the recent Wimbledon men's doubles, set up a last-16 showdown with second seeded German Alexander Zverev after seeing off British No.1 Jack Draper 7-5 6-2.

With the final grand slam tournament of the year scheduled to begin at Flushing Meadows starting August 26, Thompson, who this week cracked the top 30 for the first time, seized the initiative with a break in the seventh game and eventually capitalised on his third set point after Draper briefly brought the match back on serve.

Draper, who is partnering Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner in the doubles, dug in to save two break points in his opening service game of the second set and produced some eye-catching winners during the contest.

But costly double faults in games three and seven helped gift his 30-year-old opponent a route into round two.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Americans Taylor Fritz and Sebastian Korda who, coming off his second ATP Tour title Sunday night in Washington, progressed after Canada's Vasek Pospisil retired due to injury early in the opening set.
