Optus outage: Telecommunications network down, leaving millions of Australians without internet access

Optus suffered another seismic reputational blow on Wednesday, with a national outage leaving millions of Australians without mobile or internet access, and even leaving some customers unable to call triple-0. Across Australia, governments, hospitals, businesses, and customers were left in limbo, with the national economy stalled over what Optus called a “rare ... technical network issue”. Calls mounted for the Singaporean-owned telecommunications giant — still recovering from a cyber attack last year in which hackers accessed millions of private customer records — to be more accountable and transparent with customers and authorities. Others went harder, questioning the company’s suitability to hold government contracts, and even the naming rights to Perth Stadium. Speaking after services had been restored, Optus Chief Executive Kelly Bayer Rosmarin said a “thorough, root-cause analysis” would be conducted by the company. “What I can say is that it was a technical network issue, and that our teams have worked very, very hard to get services restored as quickly as they possibly could,” Ms Bayer Rosmarin said in an interview with the ABC. “In my three and a half years, as the CEO of Optus, we’ve never had an outage of this nature. “So it’s a very rare occurrence, but unfortunately, it does happen. It happens to telcos all around the world. It happens to other telcos in Australia. “We try and avoid it happening and we will make sure we learn as much as we possibly can from what occurred and hopefully keep it as an extremely rare occurrence.” The outage started at 1am Perth time, and for nine hours, Optus users could not make calls, send texts, access banking, or other services. Organisations relying on Optus’ services too fell victim, with businesses unable to accept electronic payment and landlines in WA hospitals shutting down. “Our hospitals are well versed in incident procedures and how to maintain services in the event of an IT incident like this, and all of them have contingency plans in place,” a WA Health spokesperson said. Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA chief economist Aaron Morey said it was hard to estimate just how much small businesses would have lost as a result of the outage — described as one of the biggest in Australian history. “Your classic cafe or small retail operator would have seen disruption in terms of payment, so their EFTPOS services,” Mr Morey said. “Beyond the EFTPOS there’s impacts on phone lines, that has impacts on all sorts of businesses right from your cafe in terms of those pre-orders, all the way up to your healthcare providers. “There will be some businesses that won’t be able to claw back some of those impacts, some of those lost opportunities.” Luc Maingard, owner of Coral Seafoods, said business operations ground to a halt as a result of the outage. “We get a lot of our orders on text and we couldn’t retrieve our orders, which are generally waiting for us on the phones in the morning,” he said. In Melbourne, train services were stopped from about 4.30am on Wednesday because of a communications fault across the train network, reportedly due to the outage. WA Premier Roger Cook said emergency services such as triple-0, public transport, and the tracking of electronically monitored offenders had not been affected by the outage. “I’m very pleased that we’ve been able to minimise the impact on Western Australians as part of the services we provide to the community, but we just expect others to be able to rectify the situation,” Mr Cook said. Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas questioned the State Government’s decision to sell naming rights of Perth Stadium to Optus, saying the move exposed the venue to the company’s poor reputation. “The Optus Stadium naming rights arrangement never looks good on days like this — bad decision any day, terrible look today,” Mr Zempilas said. Mr Cook refused to be drawn on Mr Zempilas’ comments. “We expect Optus as a major telecommunications company to do better by their customers,” Mr Cook said. “We expect them to be transparent. We expect them to have systems that don’t allow these circumstances to occur. Unfortunately, they have.” In dramatic comments, South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas called for the company to be “held to account” and questioned Optus’ ability to hold government contracts. “They have let their customers down throughout the state, including the government,” he said. “There hasn’t been a great degree of communication coming out of Optus up until this point, which I think is disappointing but not anymore disappointing than the fact the service isn’t operating itself. “If Optus want to seek government as a customer, they need to be a reliable service in this modern age. “We have a contract with Optus, as do other governments around the country. That is something we will turn our mind to.” In Canberra, Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young said she would move to set up an inquiry into the incident. “We need to make sure that all Australians have access to affordable and reliable internet and telecommunication, because otherwise, life as we know it stops, and that’s what Australians right around the country experienced this morning,” she said. While the immediate focus for Optus was identifying the cause of the outage, Ms Bayer Rosmarin said the company would look for a way to repay customers’ “patience and loyalty”.
