“I did my first aid refresher course about three weeks ago, and I've got a newborn at home,” Acting Sgt Lee told Channel Seven’s Sunrise on Boxing Day.

“I did the five strikes to the back and dislodged the biscuit that was in her mouth.”

Acting Sgt Lee recalled the moment the parents ran into the police station just after 11.30pm on Tuesday and banged on the front counter to get the attention of officers.

“They ran in and said, ‘My baby's not breathing, it’s choking, help, help, help’,” he said.

“I ran out there and the baby was quite limp.

“The eyes were barely open and the lips were blue, and I just took the baby off them and I knew what to do.

“At the time, my mind was clear. I just leapt into action and let my training kick in.

“I had no emotion really, until I went behind closed doors and thought of my daughter myself, and that's when the emotion hit me.”

The video showed the infant’s young mother visibly shaken and in tears as her baby starts to breathe normally again.

Perth Police Station officer in charge Senior Sergeant Shane Crook hailed his colleague’s quick thinking.

“He just ran in (and) assessed it, it was what it was, the baby straight under his arm a pat on the back and the food stuff came out,” he said.

“It just sort of lifts the place, a situation like that. It is positive, it’s a good result, I think everyone would have been all-smiles … police officers like good stories.”

Police urged parents or family who might get caught in a similar situation to immediately call triple-0.

Emergency staff are able to give instructions over the phone on how to give first aid to a choking infant or child.
