It can perhaps be said that successful business people need to have the strength of mind to make decisions and back them in.

For some this can also translate into brashness, or showiness, a quest for the limelight.

The businesses they run are not short of shouting their achievements. Loudly.

But of course there is another type, too. The type that applies hard work, good decisions and persistence.

And they quietly go about their work.

In this category fits Jim Kidd, who passed away peacefully on Friday, aged 70.

He was a super-successful WA businessman. His name was well known. And he was intensely private.

A search through the library files of The West Australian to put together a suitable tribute turned up precious little about who he was, other than a consistent donor to those in need due to bushfires and other disasters, and a regular sponsor of sport.

He was also a continuous supporter of WA charities like Telethon and The Salvation Army.

There were many, many generous gestures spread out over the years.

And yet clicking on the “About us” section of the Jim Kidd Sports site revealed just this: “Jim Kidd Sports is a Western Australian-based sporting goods retailer.

“Started in 1979 as a 75m shop in Fremantle, Jim Kidd Sports has since then grown to 10 stores around WA, building a strong reputation as the go-to place for sporting goods.

“We strive to bring you great prices on all your sporting needs.”

And therein lies the secret. Jim Kidd Sports advertisements were a part of the business culture of this State for decades. But they did not rely on glamorous models or high-profile endorsements.

They simply showcased his vast catalogue of sporting goods in a vast catalogue of sports.

For decades, WA kids and their parents have been heading excitedly into a Jim Kidd store for that longed-for pair of boots.

Want running shoes? Jim Kidd.

Trackpants? Jim Kidd.

A netball? Jim Kidd.

On Sunday, the Kidd family released a simple statement.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jim Kidd. He passed peacefully on Friday, December 1, with his wife and family by his side.

“One of the most influential figures in Australian sporting retail, he was known for his generosity, compassion and humour.

“His influence reached many and his generosity helped countless people.

“We understand people may wish to pay their respects, however, he was a very reserved individual and we humbly ask those to respect his and his family’s privacy during this difficult period.”
