Police are hunting a man who reportedly tried to lure three primary school students into a white van that said “free candy” on its side in Forrestfield.

Around 8am on Tuesday three children on their way to school were approached by a man riding a white mountain bike in the vicinity of Dawson Avenue.

Officer-in-charge of Forrestfield police Senior Sergeant Brad Robinson said the man then asked the children to visit to a white van that was parked at a nearby deli.

“He’s basically said to them in no uncertain terms, how about we race back to the van and you can pat my puppy dog type thing, which is a bit concerning,” Sen. Sgt. Robinson told ABC radio.

“He’s described as caucasian with a gold tooth, bearing in mind that description has come from some young kids.”

Police say the man has a brown buzzcut and was wearing a navy beanie and cargo pants at the time of the incident.

He was also reported to be carrying multiple backpacks.

Police say the van is white, has around four bumper stickers on its rear and a roof rack.

The children told police the van had the phrase “free candy” plastered on its side — which could have been painted on or a magnetic sticker.

Sen. Sgt. Robinson said the behaviour was “concerning” and called on the public to remain vigilant.

“We have a number of strategies underway ... we have engaged with our specialist police units to assist with this,” he said.

“Our greatest ally is the general public with the information they can potentially give up.

“Please be vigilant, don’t be alarmed, but be vigilant and make sure you know where your kids are.”

Police are reviewing cameras from shops on the corner of Berkshire Road and Dawson Road to assist with the investigation.
